Exercising regularly not only helps you keep slim, but also improves your overall health and well-being. Different exercises produce different results, as they focus on alternate parts of the body. There are four broad exercise categories: endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. Many people often only focus on one exercise type, but including all four in your workout will produce better results and reduce your risk of injury.

Endurance

Endurance exercises increase your breathing and heart rate. By doing endurance exercises, you are working to keep your heart, lungs, and blood-flow system healthy while improving your total fitness. Over time these activities will make everyday activities seem easier.

Strength

If you want to build up your muscles, then strength exercises, which are also known as “resistance training”, are right for you. Even the slightest increase in strength can make a huge difference in your ability to carry out daily tasks. Developing strong muscles also reduces your risk of weak bones.

Flexibility

Flexibility exercises help stretch your body’s muscles. This allows for more freedom of movement for other exercises and can also improve your range of motion, posture, ability to breathe deeply, and blood flow. Also, it reduces the muscle tension caused by stress.

Balance

Balance exercises help prevent falls and are especially important to older adults, helping them stay independent. Most good balance exercises are ones that keep you constantly moving with your feet on the ground. Heel-to-toe walking and standing on one foot are simple ways to improve balance.

【小题1】How can a person benefit most from their exercise routine?
A.By having enough rest between their works.
B.By concentrating on one training aspect at a time.
C.By increasing the frequency of their training gradually.
D.By combining all four exercise types together in their workout.
【小题2】Which exercise types are especially good for your muscles?

【小题3】Which part of the body plays the most important role in balance-related exercises?
A.Feet. B.Arms. C.Waist. D.Neck.

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White.

I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! The scrawl (潦草的笔迹) in that worried my mother, so one day when she met Mrs. White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes. Why she never red-pencilled in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical errors.

Mrs. White said, “The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, about forming sentences. I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait...” What my mother gave me was the gist of what she could remember. But I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence just like that.

And it occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pen more precisely I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a rather extraordinary teacher — to restrain (限制) her red pen. To allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower — however faultily — like that.

I used to misspell “beautiful” a lot. I never could quite remember that the “e” went before the “a”. It annoyed my teacher in high school endlessly. Eventually the “e” s and “a” s that were wrong placed in “beautiful” settled into their right places. I am glad I didn’t wait on them though. “Pretty” is easier to spell but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes.

And thanks to Mrs. White I had no concerns about writing what I meant, even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because life isn’t pretty. It’s beautiful.

【小题1】What worried his mother when the author was in kindergarten?
A.The teacher’s little attention to the author’s mistakes.
B.The teacher’s terrible attitude to the author.
C.The author’s unwillingness to go to school.
D.The author’s failure in exams and scrawl in homework.
【小题2】What does the underlined word “dampen” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Increase. B.Inspire. C.Awaken. D.Reduce.
【小题3】What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?
A.The author finally succeeded in spelling “beautiful” correctly.
B.The teacher in high school disliked the author.
C.The author owed all his own spelling problems to Mrs. White.
D.The author preferred using the word “pretty”.
【小题4】Which of the following can be used to describe Mrs. White?
A.Humorous and kind. B.Warm-hearted and careful.
C.Honest and brave. D.Far-sighted and understanding.

When we’re in trouble, we always ask our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground? Social networking sites have become extensions(延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?

In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they didn’t need to know more about technology. However, many parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation(动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them, there’s also a amount of control over privacy(隐私) that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated(违背) when we must accept a “friend” request from family members.

It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow parents to become a part of our online lives. Sometimes we don’t want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. But if you do accept, then you will feel yourself being watched and no longer feel free to communicate the way you did before.

A survey suggested parents shouldn’t take it personally if their children overlook(忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it means that he wants to be independent.

Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you choose not to add them to your friend list.

【小题1】What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Parents feel secure about their privacy online.
B.Parents have realized the importance of social networks.
C.Social networks successfully fill the generation gap.
D.Social networks offer parents a motivation to educate themselves.
【小题2】What maybe the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent’s friend request?
A.They hide something from their parents.
B.Their parents make negative comments on them.
C.They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D.Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
【小题3】What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.How to use the social networks correctly.
B.How do social networks affect people’s life.
C.Why do most of teenagers refuse their parents’ friend requests.
D.How to reduce the unpleasant influence of refusing parents’ friend requests.
【小题4】What is the best title of the passage?
A.Parents’ Friend Requests. B.Privacy Online.
C.The Importance of Relationship. D.The Development of Social Networks.

Although you can possibly get by as a tourist in weeks, mastering a language is a long-term commitment taking years, not months. The FSI has classified languages in degrees of difficulty for English speakers. Chinese takes approximately 88 weeks or 2,200 hours ranking top 5 along with Arabic, Korean and Japanese.

Each Chinese dialect is effectively another language but Mandarin(Putonghua in Chinese, which means the common language)is considered the official tongue in modern China. They all share roughly one evolving writing system, referred to as written language invented for administering a large, diverse empire.

To complicate(使复杂)the matter further, there are two main types of written Chinese characters under the same writing system: the traditional Chinese used in Hong Kong and Taiwan and the simplified Chinese in mainland China. For example, fly is written as 飛 in traditional Chinese and 飞 in simplified Chinese. They’re basically the same character written in two different ways but pronounced differently when spoken in different dialects.

Each written word when spoken is mutually incomprehensible between a Mandarin speaker in Beijing and a Cantonese speaker in Hong Kong. If you think that’s odd, consider our number system: the symbol “9” is universally recognized but it’s pronounced “nine” in English and “devet” in Slovenian.

Every word must be memorized separately as you can’t guess its pronunciation from the script-but one could say the same of English if you consider plough, dough and tough.

Meanwhile, dictionaries list words according to stroke(笔画)count. These go from one to over 60 strokes. The archaic character zhé- which appropriately, means “verbose” - has 64 strokes.

And then there are the pronunciation challenges. There are four tones in Mandarin: high pitch (say G in a musical scale), rising pitch(like from C to G), falling(from G to C)and falling low then rising(C to B to G)- and if you think that’s difficult, there are nine tones in Cantonese. In Mandarin, there is a whole poem, “The Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den” with just the syllable “shi” repeated 107 times in various tones. In other words, if you are tone-deaf you might as well give up now.

【小题1】What do all Chinese dialects have in common?
A.They were invented by the emperor.
B.They have the same writing system.
C.They evolve in the same way.
D.They serve the same purpose.
【小题2】Why does the author mention the symbol “9” in Paragraph 4?
A.To prove different pronunciations of Chinese dialects
B.To indicate the similarities in all languages.
C.To show that Chinese is an odd language.
D.To compare English with Slovenian.
【小题3】What challenge does the author think is difficult to overcome?
A.Complicated scripts and strokes.
B.Different types of characters.
C.Various tones.
D.Too many dialects.
【小题4】What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Chinese has different dialects.
B.Chinese is very difficult to learn.
C.Chinese is an ever-developing language.
D.Chinese sounds like music and poems.
