In 2025, our country has held a special “Sports and Health Year” activity. The activity wants to encourage everyone, especially students, to do more sports and pay more attention to their health.
Doing sports is very important for us. It can make us strong and healthy. There are many kinds of sports that we can do, such as running, swimming, playing basketball, and cycling. Running can help us improve our heart-lung function (功能). Swimming is good for our muscle development. Playing basketball is a great way to build teamwork.
For students, sports can also help us study better. When we exercise, our brains get more oxygen (氧气). This can help us think more clearly in class.
In schools, there are more sports activities than before. Some schools hold sports meetings every month. Students can choose the sports they like to take part in. There are also more sports clubs. For example, many students join the football clubs and the badminton clubs.
To make this activity more successful, the government (政府) has built more sports centers in cities and towns. People can go there to exercise for free. Let’s take part in the “Sports and Health Year” activity and make sports a part of our daily life!

Thank You, Flipper

To swim and surf (冲浪) at the beach, Rob decides to spend a day there. He brings his 15-year-old daughter Nicky and her two friends:16-year-old Helen and 15-year-old Karina. They go to Ocean Beach in New Zealand. Rob works as a lifeguard (救生员) here.
Suddenly, they see something strange. “Look! Fins (鱼鳍) in the water!” shouts Rob.
Seven dolphins swim toward them. The dolphins seem upset. They splash (飞溅) the water hard with their tails (尾巴) and swim in circles around the group. One big dolphin swims close to Rob and Helen, then dives underwater. That’s when Rob sees a huge gray shape moving in the water... It’s a shark!
A great white shark waits underwater. It’s not far from the people. The shark heads straight toward Nicky and Karina. Now a shark moves fast. So the dolphins use their tails to swim even faster. They splash their tails loudly to scare the shark away. Now Rob understands: the dolphins are protecting them!
The dolphins stay close to the group until the shark leaves. When everyone is safe, the dolphins swim away. “We want to say thank you and shake the flippers (鳍)!” says Rob. This isn’t a fish story—it really happens! These dolphins are true heroes.

Singapore is a small country known for its strict (严格的) rules.
Don’t Litter.
Singapore tries hard to keep the country clean. Everyone must throw their litter in a bin, not on the ground.
Don’t Take Durians (榴莲) on Public Transport.
Another interesting rule in Singapore is about a fruit called durian. Durians have a very strong smell, and many people really don’t like them.
Don’t Chew Gum (嚼口香糖).
In Singapore, people can’t buy or sell chewing gum. This is because chewing gum is very sticky (黏糊糊的) and messy when people throw it away. Singapore made a new law that said people mustn’t chew gum.
If you visit Singapore, be careful where you cross the road. Look for a pedestrian crossing (人行横道)—a safe place to cross. If there is one near, you must use it. You can’t cross the road in any other place. You can get a $50 fine if you do.
